Guthrie was of course the son of the legendary Woody Guthrie, with whom Seeger had performed in the Almanac Singers. Guthrie, who had made his own name with Alice's Restaurant, was a good match for Seeger with his aw-shucks persona and quirky humor, not only in such songs as "Do Re Mi" and "I'm Changing My Name to Chrysler," but also explaining the concept of the "un-neutron bomb" or teaching the audience to sing along "Pete style" with "Garden Song." Seeger offers his own brand of humor and banter, and is without peer in leading the audience in song. The sense of fun is infectious in classics including "Wimoweh (Mbube)" and "Will The Circle Be Unbroken," but the pair also have a long grounding in songs of social protest, and songs such as the finale, "Amazing Grace," carry a lot of emotional power. --David Horiuchi

An institution north of the Canadian border, Gordon Lightfoot is practically the living embodiment of what many think of as the national character. Stoic, weathered, and hard-working, Lightfoot practices a husky brand of folk music that's as timeless as the Canadian landscape that seems to loom above his most memorable melodies. This overdue four-disc retrospective stretches all the way back to 1962, when the Ontario-born performer tried to make it in Nashville, up to 1998; 16 previously

(180 Gram Vinyl) It's one of the lost classics of the '60s, a psychedelic masterpiece drenched in color and inspired by life, love, poverty, rebellion. The album is Cold Fact, and what's more intriguing is that its maker, a shadowy figure known as Rodriguez was, for many years, lost too. A decade ago, he was rediscovered working as a day laborer in Detroit, Michigan. He was unaware that his defining album had become not only a cult classic, but for the people of South Africa, a beacon of

Upon its release in 1974, Gene Clark's No Other was soundly reviled as an exercise in studio and financial excess, a critical and commercial failure -- it was pop music's Heaven's Gate. However, a scant year and a half later, Fleetwood Mac's self-titled album and its successor, Rumours, utilizing similar performance and production techniques, were adored by critics and the record-buying public, and have become cultural mainstays. The appearance of No Other on CD in America some 26 years after

Remastered limited edition reissue LP from 2012 on 180-gram vinyl. ''Music from Big Pink'' caught the attention of the rock critics, but it was 1969's self-titled album that broke out huge with the public. With their rootsy southern folk approach to rock, The Band grew to be far larger than simply Bob Dylan's backing band. Band songwriter Robbie Robertson nailed big hits with ''Up on Cripple Creek,'' ''Rag Mama Rag'' and ''The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down.'' By 1970, the album had worked its
